Nitrogen Fertilizer

Manufacturing of nitrogen and NPK fertilizers begins with ammonia synthesis, which accounts for 84% of manufacturing emissions. The remainder is caused by chemical reactions (primarily nitric acid). Critically, manufacturing accounts for 37% of total emissions, with the remainder occurring after application through volatilization, leaching, and decomposition.

Urea specific figures are 9.1 and 3.37 tonnes CO2e for manufacturing and use respectively, and a total of 12.5. Urease inhibited Urea is effective with total emissions of 10.05 tonnes CO2e per tonne of fertilizer
